I was lucky enough to read a portion of the book to provide an endorsement, which you can see on the cover, and I cannot wait to get my hands on the full copy as soon as it's released. I caught up with Genevieve to get the inside scoop on this exciting debut novel, as well as her journey to becoming a published author!
-Where did the idea for The Sanguine Door come from? The idea for 'The Sanguine Door' came from a short story I wrote. I decided I liked the characters and wanted to see what I could come up with with more words to play with. I have always liked the idea of an unlikable female protagonist, especially ones who just do not want to save the world. I am continually inspired by writers like Gillian Flynn and Mark Lawrence in this regard, and their mastery of characterization. -The main character in the novel is Arina Bluebell. Tell us a bit about Arina. How are you similar to your character? Arina Bluebell is a Blood Mage. Her type of magic has been outlawed by the Elect, a tyrannical government body, for over 300 years. She has lived her life in hiding, with her only goal being to stay far from the Elect's reach. During childhood, a traumatic event cut her ties to society at large, and she was set adrift forced to fend for herself. Even as an adult, she has not yet found her place in the world. For all her bravado, Arina Bluebell is deeply insecure. She can be selfish and brash, but also loyal in her own way. I think everyone can relate to feeling a little lost in the world, and maybe a little jaded that not everything worked out how you wanted. -What has your writing journey been like so far? My writing journey has been full of ups and downs. I finished editing 'The Sanguine Door' in 2018, at which point I thought it was the worst thing I had ever written and refused to look at it again for more than a year. When I finally returned to the manuscript, I changed my mind about it being trash and begun the querying process. -The world in this story is so detailed and in depth. How did you go about world building to create a world that feels so real? Thank you! I really enjoy world building and outlining. When I was younger, I remember writing short stories with paragraphs and paragraphs of setting descriptions and poorly crafted metaphors. My English teacher would gently remind me that a story was more than a setting. Hopefully I have learned from that advice! -Will this book be part of a series?
Yes, it is part of a planned duology. The second book in the series is currently being written, stay tuned!
